A sea turtle found dead with more than 300 pieces of plastic in its digestive system.

A sea turtle found dead with more than 300 pieces of plastic in its digestive system.

Plastic bags, small lids and even lollipop sticks were among the 317 pieces of plastic found in the digestive system of a green sea turtle who washed ashore on a New South Wales beach in june this year. The young turtle was the worst case Rochelle Ferris and her team of volunteers at Australian Seabird Rescue had seen during their 15 years of work in the area.

The team responds to “about 40 sea turtle strandings a year that are directly related to plastic ingestion,” according to Ferris. Unfortunately, the turtles mistake the plastic pieces for food.

A shocking 36 percent of sea turtles are affected by marine debris, such as plastic, according to recent research at the University of Queensland. Although the Australian Federal Government has addressed the issue, it is obvious that more needs to be done to reduce the amount of waste entering the ocean and inevitably destroying its inhabitants.

This tragic death demonstrates the negative impact we have on our oceanic friends. Lessen your impact by practicing the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

I cant really think of anywhere untouched by us lot, and the thing is if you did that someones bound to follow and the cycle would just keep happening, we get greedy and think we're entitled to anything we want even at the detriment of this once beautiful planet. My passion for this started in Egypt, there is no education regarding conservation out there, but coming home I discovered we're no better, in fact worse as we know what we're doing and its effects but we're lazy and greedy! ........ rant over sorry! gets me going!

you just have to look at easter island to see what humans are capable of,it used to be a thriving civilisation, then then started competing with each other building them stupid stone statues, each one wanted a bigger and better statue, the needed wood to transport the stone so they ended up chopping down every single tree, then the wildlife and animals had no were to live then the started waring over food and resores and eventualy wiped each other out down to the last man women child,i can see us going down the sam pathe if we are not carfull its happend before and canso easy happen again, yeah i seen that pic disgusting, somtimes i feel like pissing of as far away from humans as possible and just living of the land lol

I agree Marty, we humans are ignorant, and rather stupid, at least we have the choice about whether we get into the water or not, other creatures arent so lucky, have you checked the photos on here? A turtle trapped in the plastic ring of a bottle. That is quite common, they continue to grow with the ring around it, ending up deformed with internal organs restricted. I'm so ashamed of what we do to this planet :-( xxx

It was a recent book about the Naples outfit and they were very worried that drums of toxic waste would come to the surface after the tsunamis of a few years ago.
